It's finally time to reveal my secret non-miniature related project: Muelsfell: Rise of the Golems, a fantasy combat browser game.
Some of you may be aware that I was a game designer with a massive multiplayer roleplaying game for a good number of years. I'd left that for various reasons, not the least of which was a massive amount of burnout. I traded in my game design work for painting miniatures, and never looked back.
Early last year, a fire was rekindled within me, and the game design bug grabbed hold of me once again. I don't have access to a multimillion dollar studio to create the next great console or computer game, so I decided to take aim at a more realistic goal: I turned to the world of browser games and began coding.
It wasn't easy. Just to reach this point, coding, writing, and creating icons by myself, has taken nearly eleven months. Admittedly, the main reason was because I often had to stop for weeks at a time to make sure I was caught up on commission work, but still it was quite the undertaking.
The game revolves around players taking on the roles of mages who create golems. These mages build up their workshops, libraries, and resources to create ever better golems, ranging from the lowly flesh golem known as a "homunculus" all the way to the extremely tough adamantine golem. With these golems, mages will destroy monsters, raid other workshops for resources, and force other mages to fear their might.
There are five major cities, twenty towns, fifteen resource types, six basic golems, and five advanced golems, with plans to add more stuff all the time.
Muelsfell: Rise of the Golems is now in an 'Open Beta' testing phase. The basic game is free, and to play, you'll need:
- A modern browser, such as Firefox 2+ or Internet Explorer 7+ with Javascript enabled
- A valid email address
So sign up, give it a try, let me know if anything is buggy, and let's see if we can turn it into something fun.
